School Closure/Distance Learning



            Please spend at least 15 minutes a day reading to and with your child. Also take time to talk about each story—make predictions about what is going to happen, talk about the characters, discuss the sequence of events, expand your child’s vocabulary, compare the story or characters to other books read... Enjoy this reading time together.

            The is on refining blending skills so that short and long vowel words are read smoothly and so that the students use familiar chunks to help decode words (ie. ay, and, alk, ing, en, ill, it, at, er, ew, magic e patterns, and two vowel patterns). These chunks will help your child decode new words like grand, lightning,, chalk, pail, pole, gardener, etc... We also continue to work on sight words so that the students’ reading becomes more fluent—it sounds like we talk.  When your child comes to an unknown word or reads a word incorrectly, you may want to encouraged your child to skip the word and continue reading to the end of the sentence to help determine what “makes sense,” and/or to reread—start at the beginning of the sentence again—to determine what the correct word is. Some questions to ask may be, “Does that make sense? Does that look right? Does that sound right?”



            Look for 2 dimensional shapes (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, etc..) and 3 dimensional shapes (cubes, spheres, cones, rectangular prisms, etc…) around your home and places you go. Measure items to the nearest inch and nearest centimeter. Continue to work on the addition and subtraction flash cards so that basic facts are recalled instantly. Work on sums and differences written both horizontally and vertically. Continue to work on and review place value—hundreds, tens, and ones—counting, ordering/sequencing numbers, writing numbers before, after, and between, and comparing numbers—greater and less--to 120. Count to 100 by ones, tens, and fives.  Practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers (60-50=?, 20+50=?,43+31=?, 89-45=?, etc…). Practice adding and subtracting 10s to numbers quickly (55+20=?, 84-30=?, etc…) Practice telling time (hour/ :00 and half past/ :30). Work on coin identification (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters) and count coins: dimes and pennies together, nickels and pennies together, and dimes, nickels and pennies together.  Have your child group coins for more effective counting—for example: dimes first, then nickels, then pennies.



            Continue to encourage your child to write stories, notes, letters, lists, etc....at home. Students are expected to write 4 or more related sentences on a given topic, use correct spacing, capitalization, punctuation, and demonstrate an increasing number of correctly spelled words. Students are encouraged to write more descriptive sentences—using adjectives and adverbs and telling who, what, when, where, and why in their writing. As in reading, we continue to work on building the students’ written sight vocabulary and to incorporate the spellings taught in our daily phonics lessons in the students’ writing. The more your child writes and reads, the better speller he/she becomes.



            When working with your child, please encourage correct letter formation.   A simple rule of thumb is that letters and numbers never begin at the bottom of the line.  Please refer to the alphabet and number chart at the back of your Parent Handbook for correct formation.
